Capones Island, Zambales

WE ALL FEEL THE HEAT WAVE EVERYDAY. AND IT IS GETTING QUITE UNCOMFORTABLE, ACTUALLY. GLOBAL WARMING OR NOT, SUMMER IS DEFINITELY HERE TO STAY. WHAT BETTER WAY TO COOL OFF THAN TO SPEND IT OUT OF TOWN, PREFERABLY BY THE BEACH AND JUST SUNBATHE AND FROLICK THE SUMMER DAYS AWAY…
Just don't forget your hat, shades and SPF70 lotion and you're ready to conquer this scorching heat. Consider some of my suggestions for places to spend your summer vacation…

We miss surfing so much! But because it's been hectic at work, we couldn't find the time to visit La Union. Then I thought, how about Zambales? So I texted my friends and luckily, 2 joined us --- Ella and Odhe and my brother Mac as well. We met up at 7-11 (our usual meeting place for our trips) near Quezon Ave. MRT. By 4:30am, we were off to Pundaquit. It was almost twilight when we hit the North Expressway. So the fog at that time wasn't that unusual. However, around 6 am, as we were approaching Subic, we noticed that the thick fog was still surrounding not only the farm lands but the main road too! We even turned our fog lights on just to be on the safe side. It was pretty peculiar and creepy at the same time. More like a venture into the Lord-of-the-Rings scene if I may say so.

Anyway, we reached Pundaquit at around 8am. By this time, the fog has cleared  and the sun was already shining brightly. As usual, we went to Megan's resort and we hurriedly checked the surf. Darn it! The sea was flat! No waves in sight! Sigh.

So we sat for a while and thought of another plan... We decided to go to Capones Island instead which is just across Pundaquit! The last time we've been here, the boatmen brought us to the other side of the island with huge boulders and coral-laden waters. There was also an access to another deserted beach with shallow waters full of sea grass and leeches (eck!). This time, the boatman brought us to a white beach with crystal blue waters. Yahoo!!! It's so beautiful! Look at the pics and see for yourselves!

We frolicked an sunbathed under the scorching heat of the sun. I swear, we literally baked! If before I can sleep under the heat of the sun for an hour, this time I couldn't even sunbathe for 5 minutes straight! I kept coming back to the water. It's THAT HOT!!!

We stayed there until 11:30 am and had lunch in one of their nearby carenderias for a change (we were on a tight budget). For a huge serving of dinuguan, menudo, pakbet and rice, we only spent around a hundred pesos. Cheap huh?! After lunch, we napped at Megan's Videoke bar. We didn't check in anymore since we'd be resting for only a bit and that'll be an additional 750 pesos down the drain. So as the others were napping, some of us sang the afternoon away! When it wasn't so hot anymore, around 4pm, we hiked to the famous falls, hoping to do that whole 15-meter jump from the falls to the natural pool below. However, when we got there, there was no falls at all. It dried up! And the natural pool below was stagnant and laden with frogs (eeewww!). So, we just took photos instead and before night fall, decided to go back before we lost track of the trail.

We were on the road to Olongapo by 6:30pm. We stopped for dinner at Kenny Rogers. We were supposed to eat in one of those cozy joints in Subic but we got lost. So after a few hours at Olongapo, we headed back to Manila. Back to the real world again the next day.
